James Boudreau is a Senior Landscape Architect and Project Manager for CHA Companies. He is responsible for all aspects of project development, from conceptual design through construction. His portfolio includes many different well known athletic parks.

How did you become interested in Landscape Architecture?
I always had an interest in both architecture and civil engineering. Landscape Architecture is the perfect mix both.  It requires artistic abilities as well as both critical and analytical thinking.

What type of training best prepared you for your work as a Senior Landscape Architect?

I graduated in 2000 from the University of Massachusetts with Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture. In order to become registered, Landscape Architects are required to obtain a bachelor degree in landscape architecture from an accredited University. Many Landscape Architects go on to complete Master Degrees as well. Depending on the state in which you live, you are also required to pass an exam to complete the registration process, and are required to maintain continuing education credits throughout your career.

What is an average day at work like for you?

Given the nature of my work, my day can vary greatly from one day to the next. Some days I will be in the office working on the design for a new park or stadium project, other days require me to be out meeting with clients, or visiting project sites which are under construction.

What do you like most about your job?

I like the mix of both creative and practical thinking required to do my job. Clients expect me to design landscapes that not only beautiful, but are also soundly built and cost effective. In addition, my firm specializes in sports and recreation facilities which adds another level of excitement to the projects. Sports projects tend to be very well publicized, and it’s always fun to turn on ESPN, and see two teams playing on a field that you designed.

What are some projects you are currently working on?

I am currently working on a new Tennis Facilities at Trinity College in Hartford Connecticut, and Stadium and Campus improvements at Norwich University in Vermont.  We recently finished an Athletics Master Plan at Harvard University, and the design for a new Baseball and Softball complex at Boston College.

What advice do you have for others who are interested in pursuing a career in this profession?

I would suggest visiting the Landscape Architecture Department of an accredited University to learn about the requirements for enrollment.  You may also want to visit with a local landscape architecture firm to see what the professional work environment  is all about.  One of the great things about landscape architecture, is it gives professionals an opportunity to apply their skills in many different areas including garden design, sports and recreation, urban planning and sustainable design.  The American Society of Landscape Architects, is great resource for people looking to learn more about the profession.
