How did you become interested in the field of art and design?
My father was an advertising photographer so I was exposed to a world of aesthetics, design and thinking creatively since early childhood.
What type of training or education best prepared you for your work in this field?
I went to School of Visual Arts in NYC for photography but found that I wasn’t interested in the process (the craft) of making pictures. I dropped out of school and had a series of short careers until enrolling in art school again much later, as a graphic designer.
What is an average day at work like for you?
My business is virtual so I work from home in my living room in Santa Monica. I’m actually astonished that I fell into a routine of keeping normal, regular hours, working from at least 9 am (sometimes I’m excited or concerned and start earlier) and giving myself permission to end the work day after 5. Sometimes I work later but I allow myself to quit after 5 if I’m tired. I usually eat lunch while working.
What types of projects are you currently working on?
Right now I am very excited about the look we just created for of a new company that makes vitamins and supplements. We also just presented a solution for an organization that wanted a unique design for a new web feature, and we are ongoing network marketing consultants to a design agency, helping them with network marketing and website optimization.
What do you like most about your job?
For me there is a lot of immediate gratification and reward. I love to design most of all, and when I come up with something I really like, an intense rush comes over me. It’s a signal from within that tells me that what I just did was killer. That puts me in a good mood for about 48 hours. I’m in the wake of one right now.
What advice do you have for others who are interested in pursuing a career in this profession?
You have to like the process.
