Computer-Aided Drafting & Architectural Drafting Degrees

There are many different types of drafting degree programs available to those who are interested in becoming professional drafters. Some programs are specific to training students to use computer aided drafting (CAD) systems, while other programs focus more on manual drafting techniques. Although it depends on the focus of the degree program chosen, most drafting students will learn both manual and computer aided drafting and design techniques, 2D and 3D technical drawing, and residential and commercial drafting. It is very beneficial to be knowledgeable in both traditional drafting and CAD.

Types of Drafting Degree Programs

Associate’s degree drafting programs are popular among individuals who are looking to start a career in this field. Students who enroll in an associate’s degree program will become knowledgeable in technical drawing, mathematics, building systems, construction regulations, site utilities, and the materials and methods used in the architecture, engineering, and construction industries.

Certificate and diploma programs are also available for those who want to learn drafting and CAD techniques for entry-level employment opportunities. Drafting certificate programs vary in length, but generally take about a year to complete.

Job Opportunities for Drafting Degree Program Graduates

Graduates of drafting programs will have the necessary skills to work for architectural, engineering, manufacturing or construction firms creating technical drawings. Job opportunities might include architectural drafter, CAD drafter, structural drafter, or detailer among others. Job opportunities are best for those who have had at least 2 years of postsecondary training in drafting and CAD.
