Architecture Degrees
Architecture degree programs are designed to help students develop the skills necessary to become a professional in this field. Because architecture is a blend of art and engineering, proper education is vital to success. Architecture students will need to study architecture, architecture materials, civil engineering systems, technology, structures, environmental design, and design graphics. Students may also be required to take courses in art, design, history, math, engineering, and physical science. There are many different types of degree programs available to suit the needs of individuals who are interested in this profession.
Types of Architecture Degree Programs
An associate’s degree in architecture gives students a solid foundation of technical abilities, a well-rounded general education, as well as an understanding of architecture and all that it entails. Graduates of associate’s degree programs will be prepared to fill entry level positions in architecture, CAD, drafting or industrial design, but will not be qualified to obtain licenses as professional architects. Many graduates choose to continue their education by enrolling in a bachelor’s degree program.
Individuals who are interested in becoming licensed architects are able to choose from a few different educational paths in order to achieve their goals. The first path involves enrolling in a 5 year professional architecture degree program. This program is a combination of the bachelor’s and master’s degree, and is currently the most popular program among architecture students. Students will take both studio and practical courses that are designed to prepare them for placement in internship positions. Successful graduates are eligible to sit for the Architect Registration Examination (ARE) once they have participated in an internship.
Architecture students also have the option of completing a four year degree program in architecture or another related field, coupled with a 2 years master’s degree program. Students who have already completed a bachelor’s degree in a field unrelated to architecture can choose to participate in a 3-4 year master’s of architecture degree program.
