How to Become an Interior Designer
Interior designers have the ability to greatly impact people by designing the spaces in which they live, work, and play. Interior designers work closely with architects, electricians and contractors to create plans to enhance the interiors of homes, commercial spaces, and public buildings. They will use color, texture, furniture, lighting, and space to create functional, safe, and aesthetically pleasing environments. The work of interior designers is not limited to decorating. Interior designers also have a role in deciding the location of windows, stairways, escalators and walkways, and are often involved in architectural detailing. Interior designers will often specialize in a certain type of design or style.
Interior designers may find work in architecture firms, landscape companies, home furnishings outlets, building material suppliers, and other locations. Most interior designer positions require some form of formal education. Entry level positions may be filled by certificate or associate degree holders, but a bachelor’s degree in interior design would provide the most job opportunities within the field.
Interior Designer Education Requirements
Bachelor’s degrees are recommended even for entry level positions in interior design. Associate’s degree graduates and those who have completed an interior design certification program, however, can sometimes find work as interior design assistants.
Graduates of an interior design bachelor’s degree program will be qualified to enter apprenticeship programs. Apprenticeship programs usually last 1 to 3 years, and allow interior design students to gain experience working under professional designers. Other students gain experience working as in-store designers at retail establishments.
Interior design licenses are currently required in 23 states and in the District of Columbia. In order to obtain a license, interior designers will need at least 6 years of experience in the field, 2 of which must have been dedicated to post-secondary education. Continuing education is required to maintain licensure.
Job Outlook for Interior Designers
Competition for job opportunities in the interior design industry is high. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, however, jobs for interior designers are expected to grow 19 percent from 2008 to 2016. The average salary of interior designers was reported to be about $50,190 a year, but salaries will vary greatly with experience, place of employment, and type of clientele. Those who are educated and certified as interior designers will be eligible for the best job opportunities, promotions, and salary increases.
