How to Become an Art Director

Art directors manage the artwork and layouts that appear in newspapers, magazines, ad campaigns and on book covers. They make decisions regarding what images will match what words, artistic layouts, and final decisions relating to visual presentation. Most art directors work in media or advertising.

Art Director Education Requirements

Art directors usually start by earning an art degree. Art directors often study graphic design, photography, drawing and the various computer programs that are used within the field.

After completing a degree program, graduates often gain experience in entry level positions prior to finding positions as art directors. Many art directors start in graphic design or photography and then advance through the ranks to become art directors.

Job Outlook for Art Directors

Art director job opportunities are expected to grow 16% over the next decade, however competition for these positions will be keen. Art directors with the most experience and training will be the best candidates for open positions. Average art director salaries run between $83,960 and $133,450, with the highest 10% making over $156,000.
